Sierra Leone liegt an der afrikanischen Westküste und grenzt nördlich an Guinea, südöstlich, entlang der Flüsse Mano und Moro, an Liberia.

Sierra Leone verdankt seinen Namen einer Legende. Als portugiesische Seefahrer sich diesem Landstrich in Westafrika 1460 näherten, hielten sie das Heulen der Stürme im wolkenverhangenen Küstengebirge für Löwengebrüll und sie nannten das schroffe Felsenmassiv Serra da Leao, "Löwengebirge", ein Name, der später in spanischer Lesart auf das ganze Hinterland getragen wurde.

High We Exalt Thee, Realm of the Free ist die Nationalhymne von Sierra Leone. Sie wurde von Clifford Nelson Pyle geschrieben. Die Musik stammt von John Joseph Akar. Das Werk wurde 1961 mit der Unabhängigkeit des Landes als Nationalhymne angenommen.
